Title: What's next?

Abstract: Sensors and embedded devices are being deployed around the world and used in many useful and important applications such as environment monitoring, industrial process, and home automation. In fact, Moore’s Law is making sufficient CPU performance available with low power requirements in a small size, and research in materials science has resulted in novel sensing materials for many sensing tasks. However, some argue that in 2020 people will be using technology not yet invented today. The knowledge and information currently generated each year is greater than the knowledge generated in the last 5000 years. So, what’s next? Are we on track in terms of research? Once technology is available, creativity leads to new applications. But, what technology do we need to develop? Real progress comes from a succession of incremental and progressive results. But what about long term and original work?The Internet of Things and the Web of Things are two primary examples of the directions assumed in the current and possibly future sensor networks.

Bio: Jorge Sá Silva received his PhD in Informatics Engineering in 2001 from the University of Coimbra, where is a Professor at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra and a Senior Researcher of Laboratory of Communication and Telematics of Centre of Informatics Engineering of University of Coimbra, Portugal. His main research interests are Mobility, Network Protocols and Wireless Sensor Networks. He has been serving as a reviewer and publishing in top conferences and journals in his expertise areas. His publications include 2 book chapters and over 70 papers in refereed national and international conferences and magazines. He participated in European initiatives and projects such as FP5 E-NET, FP6 NoE E-NEXT, FP6 IP EuQoS, FP6 IP WEIRD and FP7 Ginseng (as Portuguese Leader). He actively participated in the organization of several international conferences and workshops, (e.g. he was the Workshop Chair of IFIP Networking2006, Publicity Chair of EWSN2009, General Co-Chair of EWSN2010) and he was also involved in program committees of national and international conferences.
